If you’re thinking about starting Reformer Pilates (or you’ve been staring at our timetable wondering where on earth to begin), this guide is for you.
At Innerform, most people who join us are brand new to the Reformer - nervous, excited, a bit unsure… and completely normal.
The good news? You don’t need to be strong, flexible, or “fit enough” to start. You just need three friendly, well-structured classes to feel confident, safe, and settled on the machine.
Here’s exactly what we recommend for your first steps.
⭐️ Class 1: Reformer - Foundation
Learning the ropes
Your first class is all about getting comfortable. We’ll show you how the Reformer works, help you understand the springs, and introduce the core movements that support everything else you’ll do.
You’ll leave class feeling:
familiar with the machine
connected to your core
aware of your posture
confident that you can do this (because you absolutely can)
This class is intentionally slower, clearer and more guided than anything else on the timetable - so you never feel rushed or lost.
⭐️ Class 2: Reformer - Foundation
Building confidence + control
Your second class is where the “ohhh, I get it now” moment happens.
The movements start to feel familiar. The breathing makes sense.Your body begins to switch on in the right places.
By this point you’ll:
understand how to set up for common exercises
feel more stable through your core
improve your coordination and flow
notice small (but exciting!) progress already
Most people say their nerves melt away after this session.
⭐️ Class 3: Reformer - Foundation
Layering strength + moving with ease
Your third class ties everything together. You can begin to add simple layers - a little more resistance, a touch more flow, slightly longer ranges of motion (always at your pace).
You’ll start to feel:
stronger
more controlled
more connected to the movements
ready to explore options and challenges
After three Reformer - Foundation classes, you’ll have a solid foundation to build your practice. No pressure, just progress.
💬 “Do I have to do three Foundation classes?”
Short answer: yes - for your confidence and your safety.
Our Intermediate classes include more coordination, resistance, and pace. Doing at least three Foundation sessions gives you the technique and stability to enjoy them fully (and avoid feeling overwhelmed).
We promise it’s worth it - our beginners feel so much more empowered when they take this short onboarding journey.
🌱 Why this three-class start works so well
Reformer Pilates isn’t about smashing yourself; it’s about moving well.
Three Foundation classes give your body time to learn:
how to load your spine safely
how to activate your deep core
how to move with control
how to build strength without strain
how to use the Reformer properly
And honestly? They also give your mind time to relax and settle in. Feeling safe, seen, and supported is half the journey.
📍 Why starting locally helps you stay consistent
Most of our members live or work right here in Lewisham - and that’s not an accident.
When the studio is just around the corner, you:
come more consistently
build confidence faster
feel part of the community
see results sooner
don’t dread the journey to class
Proximity makes this whole thing easier. You don’t need willpower - just the ability to pop in.
